Doing Business in Durham County
If you operate a new business in Durham County you will need to;
ü File your businesses name with the Register of Deeds Office located at 200 E. Main Street (ground floor)Durham, NC 27701. 919-560-0480
ü Obtain a Business Privilege License from the City of Durham’s, Business License Unit (if your business is located within the city limits) located at 101 City Hall Plaza, (ground floor Durham), NC 27701 919-560-4700

ü File a Business Personal Property Listing with the Durham County Tax Administration located at 200 E. Main Street (1st floor), Durham, NC 27701

ü If your business is engaged in the selling of Beer & Wine,
o All businesses must first obtain a permit from the Alcoholic Beverage Office (ABC)
o All businesses must also apply for a Beer & wine Privilege License from the County of Durham
o If your business is within the city limits of Durham, you must apply for a Beer & Wine Privilege license from the City of Durham
ü If you operate a Hotel, Motel, or Bed and Breakfast in Durham County, you must fill out a Hotel Motel Occupancy Tax Return. (instructions)
ü If your business rents vehicles in Durham County, you must fill out a Rental Vehicle Tax Return (instructions)
ü If your business offers a short term lease or rent of Heavy Equipment, you must fill out a Heavy Equipment Tax Application and a Heavy Equipment Rental Tax Report (instructions)
